The Secrets to Shooting in the 80s

There are many frustrated golfers out there who just want to shoot in the 80s. They consistently shoot low to mid 90s and can't seem to figure out why they can't break that barrier. Well, here's a couple of tips that will help you get that score you're looking for.
  1. Play smart golf
    • Always think about where your current club will leave you on your approach. Most golfers just try to get it as close as possible regardless of distances. More often than not they end up in a bad place or have a hard time hitting a 30 or 40 yard shot over an 80 or 100 yard shot.
    •  If it's a 300 yard par 4, probably don't use your driver unless you are accurate and can hit it 300 yards. Use a 3 or 5 wood to set you up for the next shot, so you make the green in regulation.
    • Lay up when appropriate. There's no need to take a penalty when you can just lay up and hit the green on the next shot.
    • Set yourself up for a good shot at the green. For example, if there's a bunker on the left front side of the green, play your ball to the right, so you have the whole green to work with.

  2. Know Your Club Distances

    • Get familiar with how far you hit each club by spending some time on the driving range.
    • Along with that, know what flag color means on each course. (Usually red = front of the green, white = center of the green, blue = back of the green)

  3. Practice Your Putting

    • Keep track of your putting the next round of golf you play and see how many putts it takes for each hole to finish up. Count all of the strokes above 2 putts that you hit and subtract them from your score. More likely than not, it will drop you into the 80s or really close. If it doesn't, then work on your putting. If not, then you know it's your approach that needs work.
There are some other things that you could work on, but this should get you on the right track to start shooting in the 80s.
